7-Eleven Corporation and New Franchisee Give Back to the Community

EAST LOS ANGELES, Calif., February 20, 2015—7-Eleven Corporation along with franchisee Onkar Singh, owner and operator of the new 7-Eleven located at 5105 E. Olympic Boulevard, presented Winter Gardens Elementary School with a $971 check. This is part of 7-Eleven’s “Project A Game” which is designed to help stores partner with local schools in the communities they service. The local 7-Eleven makes a contribution of $355.50 and 7-Eleven Corporation matches that contribution for a total of $711. In this case, 7-Eleven franchisee owner Onkar Singh made an additional $260 donation bringing the grand total to $971.

“As a neighborhood store owner, I feel connected to those around me and I am happy to contribute to the needs of our neighborhood school,” said Onkar Singh, owner and operator of the new 7-Eleven store. “I think if other local businesses also helped support neighborhood needs, we could improve the neighborhood for everyone.”

The $971 donation will be used towards purchasing a new lunch bench for the school. “We are extremely grateful to 7-Eleven and Onkar Singh for their generous donation to our school,” said Mrs Meltzer, principal at Winter Gardens Elementary School. “Their commitment to our communities and our schools really does make a difference.”

Dress for your Future

February 19th was Dress for your Future Day.  As part of Pathways week, the students at Winter Gardens dressed for success!  Students shared with the principal, teachers and each other their choice for their career.  Almost EVERY student at Winter Gardens could tell the principal what they wanted to be when they grew up.  Teachers reinforced the lessons about college and career and embedded this learning into various core subjects.  Students in grades TK through 5 participated in writing projects.  As part of the writing process, students filled in graphic organizers and completed sentence frames.  Great job everyone!!

Water Wanderings

5th Grade Activity:  Water Wanderings is a collaborative classroom visitation program between the schools and the S.E.A. Lab in Redondo Beach, a program of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. This collaborative hands-on classroom program takes fifth graders on a 2 ½-hour journey through California’s water.  Each class that participated had the opportunity to visit three action-packed stations where they experienced a multimedia game called California Water Jeopardy, a food chain/food web activity and touch live marine animals and plants on board the “traveling tidepool,” a van outfitted with touch tanks.
